Russian literature might not be on top of the list when comparing the different parts of world literature, but it is definitely not the last one. Referring to the literature of Russia or the Soviet Union, its humble beginnings stemmed out from the works of Russian authors, playwrights and poets such as Koyloy and Karamzin.

In the 1800's, Russian literature had its golden age. This was highlighted by the various literary geniuses who had active participation during the said era. They were also mainly responsible for the crystallization of Russian literature and adding more artistic components to it.

1. Alexander Pushkin - A protege of Vasily Zhukoysky, Pushkin started the historically acclaimed line of Russian authors during the period that is referred as the golden era of Russian literature. The specific credits for crystallizing and introducing new elements to Russian literature were awarded to this poet.

2. Ilf and Petrov - Ilva Ilf and Yevgeni Petrov were authors of prose who almost always wrote together. Their works include The Twelve Chairs and The Little Golden Calf, which were about the conman Ostap Bender's pursuit of the world's riches. These two authors were both known more as Ilf and Petrov than their own individual names.

3. Gogol - A favorite of many, Nikolai Gogol is considered to be the first of the many great Russian novelists. He is known for the realistic characters built in his works such as the Dead Souls, Taras Bulba and The Overcoat to name a few.

4. Chekhov - During the second half of the century, Anton Chekhov started to exhibit excellence in the field of short stories. He was a leading dramatist during his time and is known all over the world for his gift in short story writing. His works include The Seagull, The Cherry Orchard and Three Sisters.

5. Dostoyevsky - One of the two culminating talents of the golden age of Russian literature is Fyodor Dostoyevsky. He served as the precursor of 20th century existentialism and was making up characters using a psychological point of view. His great works were Crime And Punishment, The Gambler and The Brothers Karamazov.

6. Tolstoy - Even the least knowledgeable about Russian literature is sure to have heard of the great Leo Tolstoy. His masterpiece entitled Anna Karenina is famous all over the world. The works of Tolstoy revolved around the realities of life and the society in his time.

These Russian authors are definitely a part of the greatest ones who have walked on Earth.
